Two Countries, Nine States

How did I get here?

As I meet people, I am always interested in their story. Where did they come from? What hobbies do they enjoy? What is their family like? Where do they work? What do they like/dislike about their jobs? What's their fav. food? etc. Everyone has a story to tell, and I love to hear it.

Lately, I have been contemplating my story. And how it is that I got to where I am today.
Here a list of places I have lived:

  • Kearny, New Jersey. 2000-2001
  • Harrison, New Jersey. 2001-2003
  • Gilbert, Arizona. 2003-2008
  • Philadelphia Area, Pennsylvania. 2008-2010

  • Eden, Utah. 2010
  • Rexburg, Idaho. 2010-2013
  • Houston, Texas. 2013-2017
  • Madison, Wisconsin. 2017- present 

Each of these places have had lasting memories, but the people I have met along the journey have made a tremendous impact in my life. I was inspired by a close friend and mentor, Mike Murray, to write short stories about my life. This is mostly for my kids, but hope that others can take some of the golden nuggets of learning from each of these stories.

    moving is something i don't comprehend. I've lived mainly in two places. Montana growing up and now Utah.

In November, I proposed the idea of going to Mexico for a few weeks with the family. Catherine immediately shut it down and called me crazy. A few days later, she was telling her friend (mostly making fun of me, really) about my crazy idea and how crazy I am, and to her surprise, her friend ended up praising my idea. The next thing we knew, we were booking passport appointments. We decided to Airbnb our home while we were gone. We 100% underestimated how much time it would take to get our home ready. We had so many wonderful people help us in so many ways: coming over to help clean, inviting us over for dinners, watching the kids during the day so we can get things done, and getting a ride to the airport. We got very little sleep, but we are waiting to board and ready for Mexico… I think….

Ciudad de Mexico - Metro

Ciudad de Mexico – so much to see, too little time. We spent 2 ½ weeks in Mexico. During this time, I had a lot of stuff going on at work, so I didn’t get to see as much of the city as I wished, but Catherine was a trooper. The main way to get around Mexico City is the same as New York or Madrid – the Metro. What is cool about the metro in Mexico City is that first few wagons are only for women and children. There are usually security guards/cops in the metro, and if a man goes past the “barrier”, he/she will have no problem yelling at the guy, even if its his family. No men allowed. Period. Now, there are some things about the Metro that are worth noting here:  If you have a backpack, wear it on the front. Always in your sight. If you have a wallet, front pocket at all times. Stop #3: Puebla

My Valentine While serving my mission in Philadelphia, one of the areas I served in had so many members from Puebla that we used to call that area Puebladelphia. Since that time, coming to Puebla has been part of my bucket list.  Puebla is known for 5 de Mayo (May 5th), great food, and volcanoes.   Cinco de Mayo Celebration Outside of the US, Puebla is the only place that celebrates “5 de Mayo”. The 5th of May festivity is a yearly celebration of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla, not Mexico’s Independence Day. Perhaps the Stabios should start to celebrate Dec 18 to commemorate our victory over France during the 2022 World Cup.
